|
Jang-saeng |
The protagonist of the film. As a clown / street entertainer, he belongs
to the underclass in olden Korean society. He is macho, free-spirited,
headstrong and outspoken as well as a leader to his troupe and highly
talented in his crafts. A man determined to be the master of his own
fate, he is self-confident and shows much disrespect for authority. Yet,
there is an undeniable gentleness and devotion when it comes to dealing
with his younger performing partner, Gong-gil. |

|
|
Yeonsan-gun |
Considered a tyrant in the records of Korean history. It is said that
his madness was created by his hunger for motherly care and anger for
the unfortunate death of his mother when he was very young.
A very complex character with multiple personalities - he is violent,
yet weak; he laughs heartily, but is lonely; he is king, yet envies the
free spirits of his new royal clowns. |

|
|
Gong-gil |
He is the younger deliciously effeminate lad who plays the woman to
Jang-saeng's man in the comic skits they performed. While Gong-gil
possesses great confidence and voluptuousness in his skills as an
entertainer, he is very shy, quite and passive in person. Strongly
dictated by his surroundings, he accepts fate and understands the needs
to do what he has to for survival, yet he possesses a child-like
delicate and innocence that is not corrupted by his environment or his
sufferings. Jang-saeng is very protective of him, like a father, older
brother, good friend and may be more.
In return, Gong-gil is very dependence on Jang-saeng. |

|
Jang Nok-su |
Jang Nok-su is a
gisaeng-turned-royal concubine with a strong ambition for power. She
was the king's favorite concubine before being neglected by Yeosan-gun
after he takes a liking to Gong-gil. A woman with
a strong and yet
multi-layered personality, she remains committed and stands by her king
to the end.
